The aims of this talk are to consider massage and positioning of infants in order to facilitate development for sensori-motor learning and to assist those babies born with different needs to reach their potential. A variety of different conditions will be considered from prematurity to developmental delay, genetic and neurological conditions and moulded baby syndrome. There will be time given to discuss particular issues and concerns.
Biography:
I originally qualified as a Remedial Gymnast and Recreational Therapist 28 years ago until our profession amalgamated with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy in 1985. 25 of these years have been spent working with babies, children and young people with a variety of special needs in the NHS, Education and private sectors.
I began working as a consultant Physiotherapist at The Dyscovery Centre from its inception in 1997 until 2001 and then came back to work full time as the Clinical Manager in January 2009 sadly being made redundant in December 2009 and now work independently as a clinician, consultant, lecturer and trainer.
I have a special interest in neuro-developmental disorders (e.g. Developmental Co-ordination Disorder - Dyspraxia) and special educational needs and the implications for children and young people accessing physical activity for educational, physical, emotional and social wellbeing.
I have lectured extensively around the UK and also taught in Europe through my role at the Dyscovery Centre. I have worked as a consultant for Bridgend LEA and The National Children's Bureau and led on a project listening to the voices of pupils with additional learning needs.
I am currently completing a Masters Degree in Paediatrics and Child Healthcare Studies at Cardiff University.
To date I have co-written 2 books with my colleague Sharon Drew (OT); 'Can't Play, Won't Play: Simply sizzling ideas to get the ball rolling for children with Dyspraxia' (Jessica Kingsley Publishers) and 'Fidget Busters' a classroom resource to help children maintain concentration during lessons. (LDA Publishing).
I am happily married with two almost grown up children.

Our 2009 AGM was another interesting and busy day for the IAIM. This year it was held in London and we had two great speakers as well as a day packed full of information for our CIMIs. Thank you to all those members who attended. If you did not manage to make it this year, full reviews of the day will be in the January edition of Touch Matters.
